Trail of the Hiawatha Opening Day
Starts: May 24, 2019 - 12:00am
|Come experience the Route of the Hiawatha Scenic Bike Trail, opening for the season on Friday, May 24. This incredible ride takes you across 7 sky-high trestles and through 9 dark tunnels on a majestic old “Rails to Trails” conversion that is laced with history. The family-friendly route is 15 miles, all downhill, with a shuttle back to the top. 50 interpretive signs talk about the people, places and the history of this old RR track that rambles through the Bitterroot Mountains. Lights are needed to get through the dark tunnels (and are provided with any bikes rented to guests). The longest tunnel on the rides is the Taft Tunnel at 1.661 miles long and which crosses from its start in Taft, Mont., partway through the tunnel into Idaho.
Trail fees are $12 adult, less for children. Rental bikes, Tag-Alongs for kids to ride behind their parents, and Burley trailers for the littlest ones are available. There are also tandem bikes and trikes for those who haven’t ridden a bike in years or who feel the need for a bit more stability. Learn all about the trail and watch a video RideTheHiawatha.com. Open every day, May 24, through Sept. 22.
